Dan Bullock grew up in Goldsboro, North Carolina, but moved to Brooklyn, New York around age 12 after his mother passed away. He dreamed of one day becoming a pilot, police officer, or Marine.
At just 14, he forged his birth certificate to appear older and successfully enlisted in the Marines in September 1968. Boot camp was tough at first, but with support from a fellow recruit he made it through, graduating in December 1968.
He arrived in Vietnam in May 1969 and was stationed near An Hoa Combat Base. Less than a month later, on June 7, 1969, enemy forces attacked the base at night and threw an explosive into the bunker where Bullock and three other Marines were posted. Three Marines were killed, including Bullock — he was only 15 years old. He had originally been assigned to cleaning duty that night, but was moved to the night watch after another Marine got wounded.
After he was buried, his grave went without a marker for decades, until a veteran’s marker was finally placed in 2000.
