Hey folks, I was watching The Den of Kings, the podcast talk show Kirk Franklin hosts, and it was really powerful. Tyler Perry was on, and he talked about how he doesn’t mind reaching out to people and sharing knowledge about ownership. He mentioned the Ryan Coogler Sinners deal and said he had called Ryan—just as he had many other directors after Black Panther—to show him how to make that deal possible.

Ryan secured an unprecedented deal with Warner Bros. for his 2025 film Sinners, granting him full ownership of the film in 25 years. The deal also includes “first-dollar” gross participation and final cut rights—a unique, artist-friendly agreement that reflects the film’s themes of ownership.

Reflecting on his own first movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which is celebrating 20 years this year, Tyler said he was excited to see Ryan pull off the deal because he believes in holding onto ownership. He also noted that many people in the industry, once they rise in the hierarchy, don’t share what they know. By sharing his knowledge, Tyler is setting an example: we’re all in this together, and passing on information helps younger filmmakers succeed and take things to the next level. He deserves a lot of credit for that.
