The Confederate flag with the cross and stars is not the official national flag of the Confederacy—it is a battle flag. The Confederacy’s actual national flags were different designs used for official government purposes, while the cross-and-stars flag was created specifically for use on the battlefield to distinguish Confederate troops from Union forces. Over time, that battle flag became the most recognizable symbol of the Confederacy, even though it was never the primary national flag of the Confederate government.
