Awkward Exchange Unfolds on X Spaces Discussion

A lighthearted exchange between Glenn Loury’s grandson and Marc Lamont Hill took an uncomfortable turn during a live X Spaces conversation on X (formerly Twitter).

The moment began when the grandson mentioned that his grandfather is Glenn Loury, joking that nearly everyone in his family holds a PhD. Hill responded by asking whether the grandson also had a doctorate.

The grandson replied that he did not, then joked that he had instead “joined a cult.” The remark appeared to reference Hill’s own past public statements, in which he has acknowledged joining a cult when he was younger. Initially, the exchange was received as casual banter among the speakers.

The tone shifted when Hill responded by referencing Glenn Loury’s past struggles with drug addiction. The grandson objected, calling the remark inappropriate, while Hill defended his comment by noting that Loury’s addiction and redemption story had been publicly discussed and documented in his memoir.

As the exchange continued, other speakers on the X Spaces reacted to how abruptly the conversation had changed. The grandson clarified that he had not intended to take the discussion in that direction and asked to finish his original statement before stepping away, as the moment briefly disrupted the flow of the live discussion.
