Before the rise of Islam, southern Arabia and the Red Sea region were shaped by intense conflict and cultural exchange between Abyssinia, Arabian kingdoms, and the Sasanian Empire. Himyarites from Arabia had earlier influenced Abyssinia with Semitic culture, while Abyssinia later became a powerful Christian kingdom connected to Egypt and Byzantium. After Himyarite king Dhu Nuwas persecuted Christians, Abyssinia invaded and ruled Yemen until Persia expelled them and took control. These political and religious struggles helped shape the region just before Islam emerged in the 7th century.
